How To Exchange Your Kitchen Cabinets Knobs For Decorative Pulls

If you are tired of your kitchen cabinets knobs, changing them for decorative pulls is one of the quickest, easiest ways to update your kitchen.  This project can be done quickly by anyone who is reasonably handy with common tools.

First, decide which type of pulls you want to use.  There are multitudes of products in this category that you can browse online.  You can find pulls made of metal, glass, pottery, or even resin, and styles available include knobs, handles, and levers.

Make sure that the style you choose does not clash with visible hardware such as hinges.  For example, if you have polished brass hinges you don’t want to use drawer pulls with a brushed nickel surface.  For this reason, it may be easier to use pulls made out of material other than metal.

Decide exactly where you want to replace the knobs to have an exact count and to know if you want them all to match or if you want coordinated sets.  Next you need to know if the set you are buying comes with screws.  Some do but some don’t, so you may need to purchase them separately.

Also make sure that the set of pulls you buy fits the holes on your cabinets.  (There need to be the same number of holes and they need to be spaced apart the same way, or it won’t work.) 

Use a screwdriver that works with the screws on the hardware.  In most cases, a small Phillips head will be the tool of choice.  Remove the old knobs by unscrewing them; you may want to save them in case something goes wrong with the new versions, so you can reapply them temporarily.

The actual work is as simple as turning a few screws and you should be done in about half an hour to an hour depending on how many you have to replace. 

Once you have tried this you can do the same thing in other areas, like replacing the knobs on your bathroom cabinets or the drawer pulls on furniture.  This is actually a fun little project that spurs you on to want to do more.  There is absolutely no reason to be stuck with kitchen cabinets knobs that you don’t like, as this is a job that you could even have your older kids do as long as you provided them with the proper materials.
